  Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun charts the journey of the torturer Severian as he learns, abandons, and conciliates the mysteries of his guild to restore the dying sun of Urth. Early in his quest, he is visited in his dreams by the brides of Abaia, enormous sirens who serve an intergalactic creature so large that it must live deep in our oceans to survive. I’ve been told by friends that it is only upon the second and third readings of the series that its contradictions, premonitions, and hidden meanings are revealed, just as the early signs of the people we will one day become are made clear only when we think through our stories backwards and forwards. I’m close to finishing my first read-through. I look forward to the next.
  
  In the early days of lockdown, when sleep felt more vivid and thrilling than waking life, I had a dream that ultimately became the script Gigi & Lola. In October 2020, I worked with Ariel Ackerly in a local forest to create the test shots included in this zine. This project fell by the wayside when a version of life closer to normal resumed, but the characters and symbols from this script continue to visit me in dreams.
