I wrote these songs years before I was ready to hold the possibility that I might be trans and might need to do something about it. I see this album now as an artifact of the things I needed my body to sing to itself before it could welcome the reality that I now live in. The ‘zine includes photos and brief annotations hinting at what was to come

1.
Stoat 03:02
Softly Draw a room with air Moving through the lungs The hands, the body A stoat moves through the shadows A moment alone Under a clear plastic dome These walls are built out of light The movement of others is paused Faceless enemy fleeing A circle of thread System expanding Burrow warm by the riverbed A stoat moves through the shadows
2.
Marinero 03:39
Lace in water, hand in lace Reaching light Moon on mirror, caged in flight Reaching light Marinero búscame una perla Pluma de angel te levante a arena What rises and ripples in a sinking world What replies What memory of ocean answers Clearly in the night What replies Marinero, búscame una perla
3.
Starwives 04:24
I peer from my bed, the light streams in You wait for me at my door I think in the dark then come to you I know that you won’t stay I harm I hurt I hold I ask I arm, I am your boy On some other star, I fly from you I’m water running through your hands Wives of the stars await you Somewhere else, they dream of me too I turn to him in the dark I reach out for his warmth The bed is cold Somewhere distant He’s alone and I fly from him

5.
Empty as a shell Keening roar of a nearing swell A word nobody knows The echo drags along the page A margin nobody owns A spiral drawn out by a mage Arise out of red water Selfothermade Water, root of the wind Breath for breath, graying skin She mouths, I will outlive you Selfothermade Parasite of the eye Hole in glass, the body lies languid and fragile
6.
Aster 04:15
A maid bends to water Poured out by a star Tamer of lions Aster in the palm, she opens As before, I kneel down at the border For the same old war Over and over Rain, bring me water I can’t see or speak or hold What comes to me But still I drink A knight bends to water Poured out by a star Light in the river Runs into his mouth, his body As before, I ride down to the border For the same old war Over and over
7.
Did ghosts follow me home Or do they dwell in this place I ask for reprieve, I beg for sound sleep I dream between the poles of living Restless in the dark Divide what I hold, waiting to be old, to sleep I feel this body dying all around me A burning building falling all around me I never needed to be saved A room filling with water Drowning what I knew It breathes in my bones, shudders as it goes to sleep Awaken into a life I remember what I lost I walk through the night, to run, to take flight home

about

Ars Apparatus:

The art of the machine; or,
the art of transformation by observing and being observed; or,
the art of reimagining and building a world already immanent in the contradictions of this one.
